THE FORMATIVE YEARS...

In the beginning ..1980. . when cricket-mad Sri Lankans living in Wellington decided to enter the playing ranks and put forward a team in the Wellington Cricket Association’s 1-Day B Grade competition. The group comprised of some who had played college cricket back home, others who loved the game but had not taken the next step and others who just wanted to have a “go” at playing. Initially, SLSC had numbers to form two teams with the second team playing “friendlies” with similar teams on Sundays. The first eleven was captained by wicket keeper batsman Rohan Mendis. Sponsorships were not the norm those days and usually one had one’s own gear. We practiced on two days at the University grounds in Kelburn and these were keenly attended and was a requirement in team selection. The necessary rotation of players was never popular and always drew a fair degree of criticism. It came as a shock to some of our members when we turned up at the Ian Galloway Park for our first match. The ones who were not familiar with grade cricket in NZ expected matches to be played on grounds where only one match took place ! and thoughts of arriving at the grounds, fully kitted up with blazer etc were immediately abandoned.

It wasn’t too long before SLSC made its mark in Wellington Grade Cricket, winning the B grade, in its second year of competition - 1981/82. We had to wait till the 84/85 season to record the first centurion (Riza) in the 84/85 season though Wasantha Muthumala came desperately close in 81/82 season with 98, being adjudged LBW (the batting team provided the umpires!) The best bowling performance was by opening bowler Ajith Fernando with 9 for 34. The wickets in the 1-Day grade were not always the best and recall an incident that changed our attire in batting - when our opening batsman got hit on the face (yours truly) and I think we were amongst the first teams in the lower grades to wear helmets! The stalwarts in the formative years were the Fernando family of Ajith, Suresh, Raju and their father, Frank, Rohan Mendis, Channa Ratnapala, Lalith Jayawardena, Srilal Perera, Fernando brothers - Rohitha and Tushan, Darshan Gurusinghe, Joe Rodrigo, Krishnan Ramanathan, Asoka Mettananda, Ranjit De Silva, Muthumala brothers - Dhammika and Wasantha and Gonsalkorale brothers- Nihal and Raj. Over the years, SLSC has gone from strength to strength and it is extremely pleasing to note the success that has come along the way. My best wishes,

Dr. Nihal Gonsalkorale
